Old Comic Effect : Photoshop

Comics are one thing that all of us read at least once. Today, when I opened my bookshelf, an old comic dropped from it. And I was amazed to see the photos in it. It was all cubed like pixels on a screen and I thought that did I use to read comics with such bad pictures? Then I searched for other comics and found that every comic had those type of pictures earlier. So, I thought of giving that effect to a picture of my choice and boy was I surprised when I was actually able to do that! So, here is a nice and easy tutorial for all you Photoshop fans out there!

Before you begin with this tutorial, you might want to have a look at what else you could do to your photos in our other tutorials:

So, lets begin with the tutorial. But, before we begin, here is a picture showing what is going to be the actual output of this tutorial :

  1. To begin with the effect, download the photo I used if you want to use the same one by clicking here.

  2. Open the image in Photoshop and right-click on the Background Layer in the Layers Pane and choose Layer Properties. Change the name to "ORIGINAL", without the quotes.

  3. Now, go to Images -> Adjustments -> Levels and set the levels in such a way that the image is at its best. For my image, I am using the following setting.

  4. Now, to give the photo a grainy look, go to Filters -> Artistic -> Film Grain and apply the filter with appropriate settings, which in my case were as follows.

  5. Now, duplicate the layer by dragging it onto the new-layer icon. Rename this layer to "HALFTONE", without the quotes.

  6. Now, to finally give the desired effect, select the HALFTONE Layer and go to Filters -> Pixelate -> Color Halftone. Set the settings as follows(try to set it as per image because that gives the best output for almost every picture).

  7. Set the Blending mode to darken from the layers pane and also change the opacity to something less than 85.

  8. Now, you will have your image almost ready, but to enhance it a bit more, give the HALFTONE layer a inside-stroke of any size by going to Blending Options of the layer and choosing Stroke(Inside).

  9. Now, this is the final effect that came out for me.

Tried out the effect? Came up with something good? Share it with everyone. Post the link to your image in the comments section below.

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial as much as I did writing it for you. Also, stay subscribed to TechHive so that you do not miss any more such tutorials that I post here.
