WordPress on your Computer : A How to Setup Guide

WordPress is a blogging tool that powers a lot of online blog! But if you need to do something on it that you do not want the world to know, you can do it on your computer. In order to install WordPress, you need to have a server and generally the Operating System you use on your computer is not a server edition! So, here we would face a problem! But do not worry! I am here to help you!

In order to install WordPress on your Computer, we will have to first set up a server on your computer and then install WordPress on this computer! It is not a very long task or a difficult thing. It is just a simple way to set it up! Now, there are various servers available that you can set up on your computer but for this tutorial, I shall be using xampp. xampp is a free server installation that you can use on Windows, Linux, Mac OSX, Solaris. It is provided by Apache Friends. Click here to download xampp for your Operating System. I will be using it on Windows for this tutorial!

Set Up WordPress on your Computer :

1. Before we begin, make sure you have downloaded xampp and have the latest version of WordPress.


2. Next, double-click the XAMPP Setup that you downloaded in the previous step and install it in a specific location. The preferred location is "C:/xampp/" . Now on the next step DO NOT INSTALL any of the sub-programs as services. They can affect your system. For our purpose, leave them unchecked! Then wait for it to install. After the installation, it will ask you if you want to start the xampp control panel. Choose whatever you want. It does not matter really.
   


3. Then, unzip all your contents of the latest version of WordPress into a folder.


4. Then, browse to "C:/xampp/htdocs " and paste the files into a folder here. It is preferred not to paste them on the root folder.


5. Now, we have to start the xampp server. So, to start the xampp server, go to C:/xampp and look for xampp-control file or you can also start it using the shortcut on your computer. Refer the image below to know what to start. Also, if Windows asks you if you want to unblock it or keep blocking, choose unblock.
   


6. Then, open your favorite browser and enter the following address : " http://localhost " or " http://127.0.0.1 " and choose the language you like. Then choose phpMyAdmin from the left menu under Tools on the page that appears. Enter a database name for your WordPress installation and click Create Database.
   


7. Then, enter the following address : " http://localhost/folder-name "  or " http://127.0.0.1/folder-name " and replace folder-name with the folder where you copied your WordPress installation.


8. Now, a webpage will open up which will ask you to make a configuration file. Select that and then enter the following details on the page. Make sure you enter the correct database name for your WordPress database. For you information, the MySQL username is root and there is no password when you are using xampp as that will be used on your local computer. Click on the image to enlarge.
   


9. After the database has been verified, you will be asked to enter the details of the WordPress blog. Enter the details you like and then just continue the setup till the end.
   


10. At the end, you will have a fully functional blog with the accessible URL as " http://localhost/folder-name" or " http://127.0.0.1/folder-name ".

Just to remind you that when you make a blog like this, only you can access it on your computer and you can not make it accessible to the world with an IP address! iPhone and iPod app to wish Happy Birthday on Facebook

Wishing a happy birthday to your friends and family is something that is never gonna go out of fashion! It will stay forever just because of the obvious reason! And what better than sending a card to your friends and family on their birthday on Facebook right on their wall! Well, there is an iPhone and iPod app that does that for you on a daily basis. The application will remind you of an upcoming birthday and then you can select the card and the personalized message for the card that you want to send.

This application is called Happy B'Day! and is available on the iTunes store for free! All you have to do is just download and install the application on your iPhone or iPod and the rest is just cake-walk. I am going to share a simple tutorial on how to do that but if you want, you can simply do these things on your own! No need for this tutorial!

 Wishing Happy Birthday on iPhone or iPod :

1. Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPod and then search for Happy B'Day and download the application.
   


2. Once the app is downloaded and installed, open it.  Press the settings icon on the top-left corner.
   


3. Then, scroll down till you find Facebook Account. Click on Login.
   


4. It will open the Facebook app if you have it or take you to the Facebook website on Safari otherwise.


5. Then, it will ask you if you want to install the application or no. Choose Install and then you will be brought back to the Happy B'Day app.Then, press done on the top-right corner.
   


6. Now, Press the "+" button on the top-right and choose sync b'days from Facebook.
   


7. Then, choose if you want all friends or a specific friends list and you are good to go! Wait for it to sync all the birthdays for you and it is done then.


8. Now, to wish someone on their birthday, just click on their name and choose Send wishes and then choose the appropriate posting method.
   


9. Then, choose the card you want to send and enter your personal message below it! That's it!

WordPress Cleanup : Remove Unused Tags

WordPress is a blogging platform that powers TechHive and various other blogs on the internet and keeping your WordPress installation clean is a bit of a challenge sometimes. So, in order to keep your blog healthy and running, all you need to do is remove a few unwanted things from your blog. I have compiled a list of items that you can remove in order to make your WordPress installation clean!

Well, cleaning is good for everything and so it is for your WordPress blog! You can clean up a lot of things for your WordPress blog, which includes the following.

• Unwanted Plugins


• Unwanted Themes


• Unused Tags


• Unused Categories

These things tend to take up space on in your database and make your actual data processing slow. So, we need to perform actions to make it load fast and also remove unwanted stuff!

Before proceeding ahead, please make a backup of your WordPress files and Database just in case something goes wrong and you end up with a messy WordPress blog!

Remove Unwanted Tags from WordPress :

1.  To begin with this cleaning process, you need to install a plugin. Go to your WordPress Dashboard and Choose Add Plugin. Then, search for Mass delete unused tags. Download and install the plugin.
   


2. Now, Activate the plugin.
   


3. Next, go to Plugins -> Delete all unused tags.
   


4. Then, choose "Yes, delete all unused terms" . This will delete all the unused tags you have on your WordPress Blog.
   


5. Hope you are able to clean up your WordPress blog with this simple tool.

In case of the others, i.e. Unwanted plugins or Unwanted Themes, you will have to delete them manually because a Plugin can not predict which ones are unwanted for you! So, that is all up to you which one to keep and which ones to delete but make the right choice! Don't compromise your blog in order to remove plugins!

Get Do Not Disturb and Reply with message on Android

Recently, Apple announced its new operating system for the iPhone, iPod and the iPad. It is called the iOS 6. I did an article on that which you can find over here.

But the people developing Android apps are never behind iOS or any other mobile platform! There is already an application on the Google Play Store for select Android devices that allow you to enable the Do Not Disturb and Reply with Message features on your Android phone, which Apple is rolling out for iPhone late this year!



 

These Features can be made available on your Android Phone by simply installing a few apps that work differently and for different purposes. Like, there is an app that gives you both reply with SMS and Do not disturb feature while the other one gives you that but on a better scale and easier management.

I am going to discuss three apps today in this post that you can definitely use in order to get the latest iOS features on your Android device. Some of these features are already available for select Android Phones running the ICS firmware.

Auto SMS on Android :

Auto SMS is an application for android that will respond to incoming calls and text messages(SMS) while you are driving, in a meeting or even sleeping! You can choose the preset replies or make your own custom reply! This application is a must have for people who have to attend a lot of meetings or are persistent drivers. It is pretty easy to configure this application so I would not go in much detail for that! Here are just a few screenshots for you! Have a look at what the application is actually capable of doing.

Mr. Number on Android :

Mr. Number is again a powerful application for your Android smart phone and it is a full dialer replacement unlike the Auto SMS App. This app is capable of handling incoming calls and SMS's with the Do Not Disturb feature and auto reply to messages. You can configure this application to send all your calls directly to your voicemail or even just reject the call and send a SMS to the caller.

Auto Reply :

Auto Reply is a paid application for Android devices. It is capable of sending messages to all your missed calls or to the SMS. This application does not reject calls and send them a message but sends messages to those calls which go into Missed Calls section. Also, you can enter a list of contacts to whom you want to send the message or to everyone! And choose if it is active only for calls or only for SMS's as well.

How to Make a Form using Google Docs

Google Docs is a powerful tool that you can use to edit text documents, spreadsheets or even presentations! But did you know you can also make forms for your own use, depending on what all questions or type of questions you want to have in your form! You can use this form to carry out surveys online or even use them as contact forms for your website. This feature is pretty easy to use and you do not need to know any coding skills or anything else for this! It is pretty simple drag and drop type of thing.

 

When you make a contact form with Google Docs, you can view the answers in various forms. The two main forms include the Spreadsheet and the Summary form! It will show you all the responses to your form in the form of a spreadsheet or even in the form of a summary! It is a really good tool to use for your online surveys and managing other forms online! And who other to trust on such a responsibility but Google!

Making a Form in Google Docs :

1. Go to Google Docs online portal by clicking here.


2. Then on the homepage, click on the create button on the left and choose Form.
   


3. A new page/tab will open up with a dummy form for you to edit according to your need. First, begin with providing a name in the field marked Untitled form. Next, give its description in the text box below it!
   


4.  Now, there will be two sample questions down there for you. You can delete them if you want and set up the form as per your own need or you can simply edit them! But I will prefer deleting them and making new questions! You can delete it by pressing the delete button on the right hand side of the question.


5. If you have deleted the questions, click on Add item on the top-right corner of the webpage and choose the type of question you want to ask.
   


6. Then, enter the question and fill in any other fields. The fields will depend on the type of item you insert into your form.
   


7. After you are done adding all the questions you want, simply click on Save on the top right corner of the webpage. Next, you need to copy the access link for your form. This can be found at the bottom of the webpage. It will look somewhat like this! You can also embed it into your webpage if you want. Have a look at point 9 on how to do that.
   


8. Now, when you are done with all the above steps, it is time to say the word about your form to the respective people and get their responses. When you receive some responses, you can view them by  clicking on your form on the Google Docs Homepage.
   


9. Now, if you want to embed it into your webpage, simply click on Form and then Edit form after you open the spreadsheet view.
   


10. Then, click on More actions on the top-right corner and  choose embed. You will be given a code to put up on your webpage so that you can embed the form easily!

This week as been big for all people who use Apple Devices, as the Apple's WWDC 2012 conference took place this week on Monday and they have announced the all new iOS, the iOS 6. Well, now moving on, Amazon has finally launched its Cloud Player app for the iPhone and the iPod. It is nothing new as compared to the Apple and Google's cloud music services. The application allows users to stream and download any music stored on their Amazon Cloud Player Account. Though you can not purchase songs over the Amazon Cloud Player and listen to them on your iPhone or iPod, but you can do so if you are using a computer and buy it on their website.

You can also upload all your music to your Amazon Cloud Player library, provided you have enough space on your Amazon account to store your music. If you can, it will be an amazing thing to have for iPhone or the iPod.

Well, the music player looks quite nice and clean! It has that Amazon essence and the things you would always want to see in your Music Player. You can create playlist, browse music, search or sort by artist, album and genre. You can do almost everything that you would want to do with a music player.

Security is one of the biggest issue for anyone, be it in real life or your virtual life! Virtual life here includes your life on the internet or even what all you do on your Phone or any other gadget. There are various applications available for securing your Android phone but I personally prefer Avast Mobile Security because of its various features! The first thing, the Avast Mobile Security is free of cost for Android users! Also, it provides various anti-theft features as well which the other Android Security Applications do not provide. Let us discuss all these features in details.

• SMS/Call Filtering : SMS and Call filter allows you to filter incoming or outgoing calls and incoming SMS's. You can block calls from a specific contact and that will be automatically sent to your voicemail.


• Web Shield : Whenever you browse a web page on your  Android device, Avast automatically scans it and lets you know if there is any security threat on that particular page or no!


• Firewall : A firewall is required to block access to your Android device in order to prevent hackers from invading your Android mobile phone. Also, you can prevent internet usage of a particular application over WiFi or 3G  networks. This feature works only on rooted android devices though as of date.


• Anti-Theft Features :  There are various anti-theft features provided in the Avast Mobile Security for Android. The main features include remote lock, remote memory wipe, remote locate, remote siren and the SIM-card change notification. These features let you perform the respective tasks remotely by just sending a text message to your device.
